| Roll Tide |
[Nov. 12th, 2008|08:18 am] |
When I hear "Roll Tide Roll," I think not of long afternoons, Alabama and college football. I think of mud and receding water.
I think not of long afternoons spent leisurely watching sports from a stadium seat on the 40 yard line surrounded by friends and cold beer.
Alabama and college football are culturally and geographically far from the coast of Maine as I pull on knee high rubber boots.
I think of mud and receding water, wonder how many clams I will get and what shellfish prices are as the tide slowly rolls away. |

| AT THE RAINBOWS END & Waiting at Rainbows End |
[Sep. 20th, 2008|05:10 pm] |
AT THE RAINBOWS END "I set My rainbow in the cloud, And it shall be for the sign Of the covenant between Me and the earth... ... The waters shall never again Become a flood to destroy all flesh." Gen 9:13,15
Another day I spend chasing dreams; Those cravings I really don't need. The day dawns bright enough, Heavenly sun and singing birds. Early morning mists; tranquility. Random thoughts assail me As the devil that is society Intrudes upon me. "Now who would know if I... Borrow money from the snack bar... Or just sneak a cup of coffee... Warmed Danish and maybe..." Slippery is the slope I am on. Eventually small lies and dishonesty pile up, Naturally, we think we are not that bad... Drop the charade and look to God for help!
"One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper And a sardius stone in appearance; And there was a rainbow around the throne, In appearance like an emerald." Rev 4:2-3 --------------------------------- Waiting at Rainbows End I have a picture saved, In a stack of thumb printed Dog eared memories. Emily sits on a redwood deck railing Peering back at the camera, Large eyed and hair wind tossed, Rainbow tie-dyed shirt Ice cream stained And wet from a recent rain. Behind her right shoulder Are towering black Anvil-shaped thunderhead clouds. Behind her left, A brilliant shaft of sun Throws light upon The rain washed summer evening. The overhead rainbow Tells me all is right. I slowly return The picture To the box that I go to When I need to find my smile.
"Life may not be the party we hoped for But while we are here we might as well dance." |

| A few words on a beautiful morning |
[Aug. 16th, 2008|08:27 am] |
Three cement steps Led from the dirty dusty yard Across a foot-worn, uneven Planked front porch.
Steps and stories Are what my boyhood memories are made of.
Five hand-hewn Creaky steps to the basement, Always dark and damp. It was filled with spiders, A big boiler furnace, Neat stacks of axe-split wood, Battalions of Ball Mason jars, And my daddy's workshop.
One uneven step up from the front porch led through the oak front door Into our small, dimly lit living room. We would rest in the evening, reading by kerosene lamp after long summer days on the farm.
All too soon, Sleepy headed boys and girls, Mom and dad too, Would trudge up the wide staircase To bedrooms, quietly conversing And succumbing to sleep.
Today, in a new home With polished staircase, Who's boards never creek, Or Complain I remember steps and old stories. I miss that place.
--------------------
Melody at Night
Does anyone remember Hot night air Filled with millions Of peep frogs?
Katydids called their names And responded to their own echo. We sat In the creaky wooden swing Grandpa had shaped by hand And stacked piece by piece Into the back of a Pinto For a 350 mile trip Up from Hartford.
"Don't rock me too high I get sea sick from moving."
The old mongrel dog Beneath the willow Chuffed and snored At a dream rabbit he chased. We whispered love words, Careful not to be overheard By my parents On the other side Of thin tar paper covered walls.
Every night Was a new melody Created by God For us to enjoy And gently intrude upon. Do you remember hot night air?
------------------- Fair Game
"thwack...pop" "thwack...pop" "thwacpoppoppop"
In a blur of motion My daughter's wrist Flicked the bent darts At a wall of red, Green and blue balloons.
"Three darts for a dollar..." "Three...three...three a buck." "Throw till you win..." "Step right up!" "How about you mister..." "Daddy can we?"
So it went. One dart bounced back at me, one missed the board completely.
"Daddy can I try?" I forked over a dollar, An evil look in my eye.
"Now what you have to do is..." "thwack...pop" "thwack...pop" "thwacpoppoppop" |

| The Rumford Reporter |
[Aug. 14th, 2008|10:49 am] |
An online newspaper from my old hometown started up...not sure when, but it slipped into my conciousness about a month ago....
I am huge on the front page...makes me smile!
http://www.therumfordreporter.com/
Dear Editor,
I am an Air Force member for 17 plus years. I am currently stationed in Minot, ND, but grew up near Rumford and attended Rumford schools for most of my checkered scholastic career. I very much enjoy reading the Reporter Daily, and want to thank you all for such great and insightful writing.
I have a book of poetry published, and one on the way, along with a whole bunch of writing in my portfolios. I write on many subjects, but here is one from my childhood:
Red Rover
"Red rover, red rover, send Louie right over." 27 kids standing on the field at Rumford Elementary School. It was gym class in 1980, we were playing the one game I was good at. Remember when?
"Red rover, red rover, send Louie right over." Kids lined up, 13 on one side, 14 on the other, I had to break through the lines, like a dough boy in World War One. Remember when?
"Red rover, red rover, send Louie right over." I was the smallest kid in class, but I had bigger brothers who taught me well, and I was ready. Run fast, hit them hard. Remember when?
"Red rover, red rover, send Louie right over." The radio at work jars me, airplanes to fix! I shake off dreams, My team and I need to get moving. Remember when?
"Red rover, red rover, send Louie right over." 27 kids standing on the field at Rumford Elementary School. It was gym class in 1980, we were playing the one game I was good at. Remember when?
Anyway, have a great day and keep on keeping on!
Lou Marin
Lou Marin, an Air Force Technical Sergeant, is a native of Rumford, who has lived his entire adult life in the prairie town of Minot, ND. He is married and has a daughter who resides in Tehachapi, California. He has a published book of poetry entitled AWASH WITH WORDS. He is working on an action/adventure novel, a semi autobiographical piece about fishing in the North Atlantic, tentatively entitled, 'MainePirates', as well as working with Triad Publishing on a follow-up poetry collection. |

SEAMLESS GRACE
Sunday evening mass at St. Dominick's; Eternal forgiveness from God. Above he sits on His throne. Meek, a sinner, I am awed and knee-bent. Listless, I squirm. Everlasting life I wish for. Sitting on peeling plaster walls, Sightless angels pray with us.
God above in His eternal grace Receives our prayers and wishes. "Almighty God I thank thee!" Calm and peace fills my soul. Eyes closed I feel His sun on my face.
-----------------------
Misty Currents
Beauty is in subtlety. Jet black morning slowly rolls away. Eastward early rays fail to penetrate early gloom. Low-beamed headlights illuminate painted road lines disappearing mere inches ahead. We low-speed march south to the Interstate.
I hunch over steering wheel in the quiet dawn, fearing moving animals wandering onto pavement. True dawn does not come at six, seven, or eight.
We reach four-lane concrete; silent, low on traffic. Vanquishing barely thinning fog, the early rays start to reach tired eyes, as gloom slowly, grudgingly parts.
Green fields and valleys, Minnesota lakes and farms are revealed; a curtain is opened by magic hand. Gossamer drapes part; beauty riding a misty current.
--------------------
Immortal Eyes
Surveying the world below I wonder who is truly better; the owl or the crow. One is called scavenger, comes calling in the day. One wise but haunts the night, when light is kept at bay.
Immortal eyes of yellow gleam. Crow comes hopping along poking and pecking at trash left upon the sidewalk. Fallen seed and shiny buttons were discarded and left behind. "Caw, caw," is his rusty cry.
Old owl hides in a tree inquiring "who, who," softly to you and me. Winged death to mice in fields among hay bales. Orphaned pink babies and destroyed families his legacy.
Surveying the world below I wonder who is truly better; the owl or the crow. One is called scavenger, comes calling in the day. One wise but haunts the night, when light is kept at bay. |

Fragile Memory
I stand in the terminal with fragile memories.
I cling to you delicately. Not like a bear-hug, more like fingers on a champagne flue. I worry about bruising, breaking, scarring, scaring.
Nearly airplane time again, when you fly away for another year.
I am never sure who will step off the plane next time. Down the jet way may walk a little girl, with hugs and kisses, or a preteen, much too busy for me.
I cling to you delicately, desiring to keep you close, but allowing you freedom to spread wings. The future comes close, clipboard and release form laden, to lead you to your airplane seat.
I stand alone in the terminal burdened with fragile memories.
